Internet for all… British firm develops £22 wireless tablet to plug ‘affordability gap’ in market

By Daily Mail Reporter

A British firm has developed the world’s least expensive computer tablet for wireless Internet access, costing a mere £22.

In a move that it likely to send shivers down the spines of executives at the likes of Sony and Apple, Datawind Ltd hopes to supply a market of billions  when the Aakash computer tablet is released later this month.

An earlier version of the Aakash (Hindi for ‘Heaven’) was launched last year – under an IT programme sponsored by the Indian government. Datawind produced 100,000 tablets for Indian students.

Affordable alternative: The Datawind Aashkash tablet, at £22, is cheaper than its nearest rival - the Apple iPad - by at least £300Affordable alternative: The Datawind Aashkash tablet, at £22, is cheaper than its nearest rival – the Apple iPad – by at least £300

The newer version has more features but is still priced at around $US35.

Suneet Singh Tuli, Datawind’s chief executive officer, said: ‘We have already received over three million individual hand users pre-booking on this.’

The company said it was not planning to take on the big tablet producers but provide internet access to people who fall through an ‘affordability’ gap in the market.

The closest competing device to the Aakash is Apple’s iPad, which sells for £330 or more.

Filling the gap: Datawind CEO Suneet Singh Tuli said the Aakash would provide affordable internet access to four billion users around the worldFilling the gap: Datawind CEO Suneet Singh Tuli said the Aakash would provide affordable internet access to four billion users around the world

With a difference in price of a staggering £300, the Aakash is clearly for emerging nations and institutions with tight budgets, places such as schools and hospitals, that would find a £300-per-tablet price prohibitive.

Mr Singh said: ‘iPad people have laptops and computers and want multimedia devices for more mobility.’

Low-income people in underdeveloped countries are ‘looking for their first device’ to gain access to the world-wide web.

World-wide mobile phone use has grown to almost six billion, while the number of Internet subscribers was at two billion.

‘The most important thing is the price. And within that price, [customers] primarily want to get Internet access, want to have good multimedia… and then basic applications’

- Datawind CEO Suneet Singh Tuli

Yet Mr Singh suggests there’s a further four billion people who want wireless internet access but cannot afford it.

In India, for example, an estimated eight per cent of 1.2 billion population is connected to the Internet.

Internet giant Google predicted in September that the number of India’s Internet users could triple in three years if they were offered easier wireless access and more affordable smartphones.

Datawind clearly hopes that Aakash will be tablet that provides that affordable alternative.

But there are drawbacks to providing such a cheap platform – critics have complained of Aakash having a dim screen, brief battery life and slow response time.

But Mr Singh said that was an unfair assessment of a product that did not pretend to be a high-end tablet.

He said: ‘The most important thing is the price. And within that price, [customers] primarily want to get Internet access, want to have good multimedia… and then basic applications.

‘Right now we are alone because nobody wants to focus on that market. The biggest players don’t want to make devices at that level because it impacts their legacy products.’

Apple’s Gatekeeper: better security or threat to our freedoms?

In 2007, Mac OS X gave birth to the iPhone OS, now known as IOS. Last summer, the release of Lion, Mac OS X 10.7, has established a milestone in the history of Apple’s operating system. The time had come for the younger, to rebound a bit of its glory and its functions on its predecessor.
A process that has accelerated with the announcement yesterday of Mountain Lion, ie Mac OS X 10.8. One might procrastinate on the crisis of innovation that affects conventional operating systems, which now seem to focus only on mobility: think Metro Interface for Windows 8, for example. But this is not our purpose. After all, no matter where does innovation as it allows a more enjoyable and simplified use and protects the user …

Brave new world

Yet the pleasure of the controversy, anticipation, much as a hint of paranoia, lead us to worry about discovering the gatekeeper function … Is it not, under cover of usability, integration and enhanced security, one step closer to the gilded cage that seems to be the model of post-PC? A world born of the dark hours spent in hair pulling, in the 90s, before computers unstable and frustrating. A world where the user certain freedoms to sacrifice user experience smoother, more enjoyable, but more limited.
Gatekeeper, three settings between freedom and security

After the introduction of the Mac App Store in Lion, Apple continues to take up the market for software distribution on Mac OS X by introducing Gatekeeper. A security tool that can, depending on the settings you have chosen, not letting you download the applications from the Mac App Store.
Three options are available in Gatekeeper settings:

- The ability to install whatever you want freely (it is disabled in this case?)
- To install only the applications through the Mac App Store or digitally signed by an Apple developer ID,
- Finally the only use the Mac App Store.

To reassure, Apple says it is possible “to temporarily bypass your settings, by clicking and pressing the Ctrl key, and install any application at any time. Gatekeeper allows you total freedom. “

Perchance to dream …

What would reassure us – if it is a matter of offering the choice between freedom and security – is that a Gatekeeper makes its appearance in IOS. One could then choose applications from the App Store or from other blinds, less secure, but less controlled.

Safety goodwill

According to Apple, Gatekeeper is another “maximum safety for your Mac.” This is also another step closer to the market for software distribution on Mac OS X from what has been invented, with the success it is, for the iPhone. A kiosk download single only gateway for new applications approved. This has its advantages, the peace of mind, ease of installation and update, but this is not necessarily guaranteed to be protected. The latest twists in the case Path is evidence that the application control is not the ideal solution we hoped. It avoids possibly malware, thanks to the validation of applications, but does not prevent the theft of what is precious to us, beyond the safety of our devices, our personal data.
Therefore, Gatekeeper offering the same model, one can imagine that the door will not necessarily be very careful or at least that its opening will be subject to the whim of Apple and not the vigilance of users. And when one is surrounded by impassable barriers to protect themselves from the outside, but outside the crossing anyway, we are left while the lack of freedom, that the prison that it was built .
However, in the near future, the picture painted is not black, it offers more shades of gray. Indeed, one can not say today that Apple will not make choices in Mountain Lion (see box).

Messages, replacing it with iChat, will be integrated with Mac OS and IOS.

Think differently

Unfortunately, given the merger forced march between IOS and Mac OS, how not to fear that sooner or later, the model of the iPhone will require Mac users, no loopholes, if not that of jailbreak? If those who have discovered Apple with the iPhone there are perhaps no complaints, it remains at the bottom of the old macmaniaque, in mind of the user who liked Mac OS X from day one, despite its numerous bugs, because it was vibrating energy of BSD, as a fear. That one day, as on the iPhone – which is all the talent to make us forget thanks to its unparalleled experience that we are not free – we will not have any hands on our Apple computer, it is already difficult or impossible to update yourself physically. In a golden cocoon, then we can do everything smoothly, except to be free, except apply, whenever we want, this famous motto: “Think Different”.

Saudi hackers attack Israel’s stock exchange and national airline

Tel Aviv – The websites of the Tel Aviv stock exchange and the Israeli national airline have been attacked by hackers identified with a known Saudi group. There have been attacks in the past two weeks on Israeli businesses with details of credit cards posted online.
BBC reports that the latest attacks on Israel directed at the Tel Aviv stock exchange website, caused the site to be overloaded with traffic leading to denial of service messages such as “site on maintenance,” or too “busy.” According to a spokeswoman of the Tel Aviv stock exchange Orna Goren, “The website is working as normal. What the hacker did is he put a lot of traffic on the entrance to the website…There are too many users so it’s hard to get into the site but our trading system is working as usual. Now we are trying to clear the traffic so everyone can use the site. We’ll discuss what we can do in future to solve these issues.” BBC reports that Israel’s national airline El Al, has also reported “Saudi hacker activity,” causing disruption of its online services. Daily Mail reports, however, that El Al brought down its website to prevent anticipated attacks. According to a statement by the airline, “El Al is aware that for the past two weeks cyber war rages against Israel.” The cyber attacks began early in the month when hackers who identified themselves as “group-xp,” a group already known as a Saudi hacking group, said they gained access to 40,000 Israeli credit card accounts and described their attack as a “gift to the world for the New Year.” The attacks involved disruption of online services of First International Bank of Israel (FIBI) and two subsidiary banks, Massad and Otzar Hahayal. After the first attacks on Israeli banks and businesses, a Saudi hacker identifying himself as OxOmar, said further attacks were planned. According to YNet News, OxOmar said further attacks would be carried out by a pro-Palestinian group called “Nightmare.” Jerusalem Post reports that OxOmar said he would stop cyber attacks only if Israel apologizes for “genocide” on Palestinians. YNet News also reports that OxOmar demanded apology from Israel. Oxomar said he joined forces with “Nightmare” to fight Israel. According to OxOmar, “I want to harm Israel in any way possible. I can harm them in Cyber world so I would do anything for this world. I’ll let Israeli authorities cry and suffer.” The hacker explained: “A lot of Arab hackers decided to join us and we are managing a private channel together.” He boasted: “No one in this world going to arrest me. It’s impossible to find me and I’ll keep attacking Israel. Just stay and watch.” “OxOmar” also demanded apology from the Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon, who said that the hackers’ activities were acts of terror. OxOmar said, “Danny Ayalon should ask for apologize (sic) from me for threatening me to death and Israeli authorities should ask for apologize (sic) from Gaza people for genocide, they should ask for apologize for Sabra and Shatila massacre. Then we may reduce power of attacks.” (sic). According to YNet News, Ayalon has called on the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Sub-Committee to convene an emergency session on Israel’s need of an elite cyber unit. The Israeli banking system is considering blocking online access for overseas users as a protective measure. Daily Mail reports that meanwhile, Hamas, the Islamic group that governs the Gaza strip, has applauded the attacks and called for more. Hamas, according to Daily Mail, hailed the attack as a “blow against the Jewish state.” According to Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri Ham, “This is a new field of resistance against the Occupation and we urge Arab youth to develop their methods in electronic warfare in the face of [Israel's] crimes.” BBC reports that after the hacker attack that affected at least 20,000 active credit cards, an Israeli hacker retaliated, publishing details of hundreds of Saudi credit cards online, portending a possible escalation of cyber-war in the Middle East.

That’s why I was particularly thrilled when I learned Cisco’s Middle Eastern Diversity and Inclusion (MEDI) group hosted a Developing Local Talent in Technology Workshop (DLTT) at the world’s third oldest technical university that focuses on engineering sciences, Istanbul Technical University.
