Internet for all… British firm develops £22 wireless tablet to plug ‘affordability gap’ in market
A British firm has developed the world’s least expensive computer tablet for wireless Internet access, costing a mere £22.
In a move that it likely to send shivers down the spines of executives at the likes of Sony and Apple, Datawind Ltd hopes to supply a market of billions when the Aakash computer tablet is released later this month.
An earlier version of the Aakash (Hindi for ‘Heaven’) was launched last year – under an IT programme sponsored by the Indian government. Datawind produced 100,000 tablets for Indian students.
Affordable alternative: The Datawind Aashkash tablet, at £22, is cheaper than its nearest rival – the Apple iPad – by at least £300The newer version has more features but is still priced at around $US35.
Suneet Singh Tuli, Datawind’s chief executive officer, said: ‘We have already received over three million individual hand users pre-booking on this.’
The company said it was not planning to take on the big tablet producers but provide internet access to people who fall through an ‘affordability’ gap in the market.
The closest competing device to the Aakash is Apple’s iPad, which sells for £330 or more.
Filling the gap: Datawind CEO Suneet Singh Tuli said the Aakash would provide affordable internet access to four billion users around the worldWith a difference in price of a staggering £300, the Aakash is clearly for emerging nations and institutions with tight budgets, places such as schools and hospitals, that would find a £300-per-tablet price prohibitive.
Mr Singh said: ‘iPad people have laptops and computers and want multimedia devices for more mobility.’
Low-income people in underdeveloped countries are ‘looking for their first device’ to gain access to the world-wide web.
World-wide mobile phone use has grown to almost six billion, while the number of Internet subscribers was at two billion.
‘The most important thing is the price. And within that price, [customers] primarily want to get Internet access, want to have good multimedia… and then basic applications’
- Datawind CEO Suneet Singh Tuli
Yet Mr Singh suggests there’s a further four billion people who want wireless internet access but cannot afford it.
In India, for example, an estimated eight per cent of 1.2 billion population is connected to the Internet.
Internet giant Google predicted in September that the number of India’s Internet users could triple in three years if they were offered easier wireless access and more affordable smartphones.
Datawind clearly hopes that Aakash will be tablet that provides that affordable alternative.
But there are drawbacks to providing such a cheap platform – critics have complained of Aakash having a dim screen, brief battery life and slow response time.
But Mr Singh said that was an unfair assessment of a product that did not pretend to be a high-end tablet.
He said: ‘The most important thing is the price. And within that price, [customers] primarily want to get Internet access, want to have good multimedia… and then basic applications.
‘Right now we are alone because nobody wants to focus on that market. The biggest players don’t want to make devices at that level because it impacts their legacy products.’

Actress-singer Demi Lovato: ‘I’ll have to fight the addiction for the rest of my life’
They played young lovers in this year’s hit BBC film Birdsong.
And could life be imitating art of Eddie Remayne and French actress Clémence Poésy?
The pair looked smitten in the front row for Burberry at London Fashion Week yesterday.
Captivated: Eddie Redmayne (centre) only had eyes for his Birdsong co-star Clémence Poésy, while Rosie Huntington Whiteley watches the Burberry show at London Fashion Week
Despite gorgeous supermodel, and Eddie’s fellow Burberry model, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, sitting beside him, he only had eyes for his blonde co-star.
They looked deep in conversation as Clémence continued to clap as the model strutted in front of her at Kensington Gardens.
Star-studded: The trio were joined by Mario Testino and Kate Bosworth

Trouser combos: Clémence and Rosie look stylish as they arrive for the show
Stylish trio: Rosie shed her jacket while inside as she posed with Eddie and famed photographer Mario Testino
Birdsong, which premiered last month, was an adaptation of the Sebastian Faulks novel of the same name.
The two-part series saw Eddie as Stephen Wraysford and Clémence as married Isabelle Azaire with whom he had an affair.
Set during Work War I, the story is told in flashbacks.

Different strokes: Alexa Chung showed off her extremely skinny legs in a short black dress with a white collar, while Poppy Delevigne covered up in a flowing green skirt
Clémence looked stylish today in a red polka dot blouse which she paired with grey cropped trousers and heels with black tights underneath.

Feeling stressed? Statuesque Rosie stands out in the crowd at the show
Looking in awe: Clémence, Eddie, Rosie and Mario watch a model on the catwalk with interest

On the guest list: Singer Will Young and model Jacquetta Wheeler were also in attendance
The singer tweeted on her way to the show, saying: ‘En route to Burberry LFW show. My 3 year old just asked me if I’m wearing my long silvery dress ‘because I’m getting married’?’
There was an embarrassing moment for Will-i.am and heptahlete Denise Lewis when the paired arrived in the same Burberry jacket.
Denise, who won gold at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, even paired hers with black trousers like the Black Eyed Peas rapper.
Pretty in a pant-suit: The Prime Minister’s wife Samantha Cameron also attended with retail entrepreneur Harold Tillman
Celebrity friends: Eddie is deep in conversation with Mario, while Clémence talks to Alexa

Pretty pair: Eddie looked handsome in a blue suede blazer and sweater vest, while Anna uncharacteristically smiled while walking into the show
All she needed was the gold-rimmed glasses like the star.
Holly Valance looked pretty in a navy lace with a beige trench coat draped over her shoulders. She was joined by her billionaire property developer fiancé Nick Candy.
Kate Bosworth opted for a high-waisted green knitted skirt and a grey jumper with an owl printed on the front, while Alexa Chung wore a black, long-sleeved dress with a white collar.
Also on the guest list was Will Young, who played it safe in a blue jumper and black trousers.

Apple’s Gatekeeper: better security or threat to our freedoms?
In 2007, Mac OS X gave birth to the iPhone OS, now known as IOS. Last summer, the release of Lion, Mac OS X 10.7, has established a milestone in the history of Apple’s operating system. The time had come for the younger, to rebound a bit of its glory and its functions on its predecessor.
A process that has accelerated with the announcement yesterday of Mountain Lion, ie Mac OS X 10.8. One might procrastinate on the crisis of innovation that affects conventional operating systems, which now seem to focus only on mobility: think Metro Interface for Windows 8, for example. But this is not our purpose. After all, no matter where does innovation as it allows a more enjoyable and simplified use and protects the user …
Brave new world
After the introduction of the Mac App Store in Lion, Apple continues to take up the market for software distribution on Mac OS X by introducing Gatekeeper. A security tool that can, depending on the settings you have chosen, not letting you download the applications from the Mac App Store.
Three options are available in Gatekeeper settings:
- The ability to install whatever you want freely (it is disabled in this case?)
- To install only the applications through the Mac App Store or digitally signed by an Apple developer ID,
- Finally the only use the Mac App Store.
To reassure, Apple says it is possible “to temporarily bypass your settings, by clicking and pressing the Ctrl key, and install any application at any time. Gatekeeper allows you total freedom. “
Perchance to dream …
What would reassure us – if it is a matter of offering the choice between freedom and security – is that a Gatekeeper makes its appearance in IOS. One could then choose applications from the App Store or from other blinds, less secure, but less controlled.
Safety goodwill
Therefore, Gatekeeper offering the same model, one can imagine that the door will not necessarily be very careful or at least that its opening will be subject to the whim of Apple and not the vigilance of users. And when one is surrounded by impassable barriers to protect themselves from the outside, but outside the crossing anyway, we are left while the lack of freedom, that the prison that it was built .
However, in the near future, the picture painted is not black, it offers more shades of gray. Indeed, one can not say today that Apple will not make choices in Mountain Lion (see box).

Messages, replacing it with iChat, will be integrated with Mac OS and IOS.
Think differently

Developing Local Talent in Technology (DLTT) Sets New Record in Indonesia
Instanbul is known for many things—impressive architecture, mouth-watering cuisine (in my humble opinion), rich cultural history, and so much more. That’s why I was particularly thrilled when I learned Cisco’s Middle Eastern Diversity and Inclusion (MEDI) group hosted a Developing Local Talent in Technology Workshop (DLTT) at the world’s third oldest technical university that focuses on engineering sciences, Istanbul Technical University.
